Dubai has several projects that are among the largest in the world. For example, you have the highest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa. But the Dubai Mall and Dubai Fountain are also some of the largest projects in the world! You can supplement these three with dozens of other projects in Dubai that belong to this group. From 2020 there will be another, Ain Dubai, the largest Ferris wheel in the world.
Building developer Meraas is responsible for this job. Meraas is known for other major projects such as La Mer and Kite Beach. These are just two projects from the building developer. In 2013, Meraas received the green light for another major project, Bluewaters. The Bluewaters Island is an artificial island that opened to the public at the end of 2019.
To really put the Bluewaters project in the spotlight, they decided to house a major attraction, Ain Dubai. With a height of more than 250 meters, it will be the largest Ferris wheel in the world!
After the approval of the Ruler of Dubai, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Bluewaters project could be started. In May 2013, a start was made on constructing the artificial island that would form the basis for Ain Dubai, then called Dubai Eye. The observation wheel that was originally going to be 210 meters high was adjusted to 250 meters over time.
This to be able to compete with the New York Wheel. To secure the Ain Dubai observation wheel for some time from the title, largest in the world, it was decided to make the Ferris wheel 40 meters higher. In the meantime, the New York Wheel has been completely canceled due to financial and permit issues.
The entire observation wheel has a total weight of no less than 9,000 tons! A big question was how to get started. The works started with the anchoring of the four legs. According to Meraas, these have a length equal to 15 London buses. After the attachment of the legs on the Bluewaters Island, the construction of the rim was started. The rim was built in eight parts.
To keep everything together, various temporary steel wire cables and brackets were used. These temporary steel spokes and brackets weighed 5,000 tons! With the removal of the temporary steel structure, the weight was completely transferred to the 192 permanent spoke cables, which must ensure that the rim stays in place.
Currently, the capsules are not yet attached to the rim. In the course of 2020, 48 capsules will be fitted to the ferris wheel. This gives the largest Ferris wheel in the world a capacity of 1,400 people in total. Most capsules will be able to carry 40 passengers.
There are, however, several capsules that will be equipped with a bar and some may even offer the option of dining at a height of 250 meters. The total duration of a ride will be approximately 45 minutes. The view at the top of the observation wheel will be wonderful.
You can find the observation wheel on the artificial Bluewaters Island, against Dubai Marina.
